AZUSA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific earned a win at its home opener, defeating Colorado School of Mines 1-0 Thursday night. Freshman
Logan Race scored the lone goal of the match, assisted by
Chris Bak.
How it Happened: The Cougars controlled most of the first half, with 68% of possession. They knocked on Colorado School of Mines's door repeatedly, recording seven shots compared to the Orediggers' one shot. In the 37th minute,
Hamza Adam fired a shot from the top of the box, but the Mines goalkeeper deflected it out of bounds to keep the game scoreless.Â
The beginning of the second half was the same story, with Azusa Pacific out-possessing the Orediggers, but unable to capitalize on its chances.Â
In the 66th minute, the Cougars sent in a corner kick that was deflected out by Mines' defense. The ball landed at the feet of
Chris Bak and he sent in another cross. Less than a minute after subbing into the game, freshman
Logan Race got onto the end of Bak's cross, slotting the ball into the bottom left corner of the net with the outside of his right foot.Â
The Orediggers had no answer for the Cougars, as Azusa Pacific continued to outshoot its opponent 6:3 in the remaining 24 minutes.
Fritz Oestreicher led the backline to a clean sheet, only allowing two shots on goal through 90 minutes.Â
By the Numbers: Azusa Pacific outshot Mines 16:6 with eight shots on target compared to the Orediggers two. Azusa Pacific also had 12 corner kicks and five different Cougars had a shot on goal. The Cougars had a majority of possession with 61% over 90 minutes.
