Late Rally Cut Short

Azusa Pacific fell 15-6 in a non-conference battle against Concordia on Tuesday evening.

AZUSA, Calif. — With a 15-6 loss on Tuesday evening to Concordia, Azusa Pacific moved to 17-19 this season. Although the Cougars are 2-3 against the Golden Eagles in the 2024 season, Azusa Pacific leads the overall rivalry 120-36, dating all the way back to 1987.

The game saw big hits from the seasoned veterans, including Cade Marshman and company, but also marked a first for Doug Pyle. Will Medina and Tyler Durbin both scored home runs as well.

Overall, the Cougars were able to compile six hits against the Golden Eagles while the pitching staff contributed six strikeouts on defense.

How It Went: The Cougars jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as George Christison reached first on an error and then scored thanks to an RBI double from Cade Marshman. Marshman's 37 RBI this season leads the team and his .326 batting average is currently second-best, behind Mikey Easter.

After a strong start, the Cougars ran into some trouble giving up a home run to right field and an unearned run on an error in the second inning and seven more runs in the third inning to bring the score to 10-1.

After the Golden Eagles earned another run in the seventh inning to make the score 11-1, the Cougars found a little groove in the 8th inning. Will Medina started the inning off with a home run, the fourth of his career and first this season. Then, to collect his first hit in an Azusa Pacific uniform, Doug Pyle doubled into the right-field corner to score both Jeffrey Castillon and Brady Malpass. Keeping the magic going, the very next at-bat saw a home run from Tyler Durbin, his first hit of the season and the first homer of his collegiate career, which helped the Cougars cut their deficit to 11-6 heading into the final inning.

Looking to close out the game, the Cougars were unable to contain the Golden Eagles who compiled four more runs to end the game 15-6.

Up Next: The Cougars will look to turn a new leaf with an upcoming four-game series starting on Friday at home. The doubleheader against Westmont will kick off at noon with the second game to follow. Azusa Pacific will then travel to Santa Barbara for day two of the series with a doubleheader scheduled for 12pm.
