SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Azusa Pacific struggled on the road, dropping both halves of a doubleheader at fifth-ranked Point Loma by finals of 8-3 and 7-4 Friday afternoon at Carroll B. Land Stadium.
Game One:Â Point Loma 8, Azusa Pacific 3
Both teams were kept quiet offensively through the early innings. In the top of the fourth, with two on and two out,
Carson Collett put the visitors on the board with the first hit of the contest for either team, an RBI single. The following inning, again with two out,
Mikey Easter singled, bringing up
Cade Marshman. The center fielder blasted a 1-2 pitch over the wall in left for his seventh home run of the season, giving the Cougars a 3-0 lead.
Isaac Mendez retired the first nine batters he faced and kept a no-hitter intact through five. But Point Loma got on the board with a run in the sixth; and after the Cougars left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, the Sea Lions pounced, taking advantage of three walks with a sac fly and a three-run Homer to take the lead, then tacking on three more in the eighth to pull away. The Cougars drew seven walks in the game, but also left nine runners on base.
Game Two:Â Point Loma 7, Azusa Pacific 4
The Cougars once again struck first, as
Cameron Lee singled, stole second, and came around to the plate on a Marshman infield hit in the top of the first. The Sea Lions would answer back with a single run in the second, then step on the gas in the third, hitting three doubles in the inning and plating three more runs to take a 4-1 lead.
Point Loma would continue to pile on in the fourth, utilizing a walk, a single, and a home run to double their lead to half a dozen at 7-1, where the score would remain until the final inning. In that top of the seventh,
Will Medina led off with a single. He would come around to score on a pinch-hit homer from
Will Allen. Easter would add an RBI single with two out, allowing the Cougars to bring the tying run to the plate, but that was as close as they would get. Lee went 3-4 at the plate in game two, while
Abraham Carrillo threw a pair of scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
