Cougars swept by Point Loma for second time in 24 hours

AZUSA, Calif. – The Cougars have their work cut out for them going into the final week of the season after dropping both halves of another doubleheader to Point Loma on Saturday afternoon, falling by scores of 7-1 and 9-6 inside the Cougar Baseball Complex.

Game One:  Point Loma 7, Azusa Pacific 1

Game one was mostly dominated by the Sea Lions, who kept the Cougars without a baserunner for the first three innings.  Point Loma got an unearned run in the second, then put two more on the board in the third.  The Cougars got on the board in the fifth.  Danny Yanez hit a one-out double to center field, then came around on an Omar Lopez single.  While the Cougars would grind out nine hits over the final six innings of the game, they would be unable to effect any more changes to the scoreboard.  Meanwhile, the Sea Lions put three more runs on the board in the seventh and another in the eighth to secure the series victory.  Yanez and Lopez each had two hits for the Cougars, while Aidan Langley struck out five batters over 6.2 innings on the mound.

Game Two:  Point Loma 9, Azusa Pacific 6

The Cougars struck as soon as possible.  Cameron Lee led off the game with a double, stole third, and came in on a Cade Marshman single.  While the Sea Lions immediately answered with three runs in the top of the second, the Cougars kept it close.  Omar Lopez led off the second with a home run that nearly cleared the netting in left field to cut it to 3-2.  With one out and a runner on first, Yanez hit his second double of the day.  Both runners would score on a Will Medina single to put the home team back in front 4-3.

The score would remain that way until the fifth, when the bottom fell out.  With one out, the Sea Lions drew three consecutive walks, forcing a pitching change.  A single tied the game, then a hit batter gave Point Loma the lead.  And the decisive blow was a bases-clearing double to right center that gave the Sea Lions an 8-4 lead.  Point Loma would tack on a solo homer in the seventh before the Cougars would pull a couple back in their last at-bat via an RBI double from Marshman and Yanez reaching again via a throwing error.  Kohl Peterson threw a scoreless sixth inning out of the bullpen, while Lopez had a three-hit game.

Up Next:  Azusa Pacific (18-26, 13-14 PacWest) have a final four-game split series against Fresno Pacific, and they will likely need to win the series to lock down a spot in the PacWest Tournament that the Cougars are scheduled to host in May.  The series will begin with a doubleheader in Fresno on Thursday at 2:00 p.m.
