LA MIRADA, Calif. - When all was said and done after the two day match between Azusa Pacific and Biola, it was the Cougars that emerged the 4-1 victors. The match up started on Thursday afternoon, however, it was postponed until Friday afternoon due to rain and lighting in La Mirada. With the win, the Cougars improve to 9-0 on the 2024 campaign.Â
The Cougars' No. 1 doubles pairing of
Elias Emilio Walter and
Miha Velicki opened with a 6-2 win, and the No. 3 pair of
Soeren Grandke and
Constantin Barth clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 triumph. Grandke and Barth are unbeaten in three matches together.]
After the Eagles won at No. 1 singles, Walter put the visitors back on top with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 to improve his individual record to 9-0. The match was then halted until this afternoon.
Barth got the first victory on Friday, as he won in straight-sets at No. 5 (6-3, 7-5) to get the Cougars within one point of clinching at 3-1. Barth is now 7-0 this season, including a 5-0 showing in the No. 5 spot.
Grandke would seal the deal on this round of the Cornerstone Cup, as he won the first set 6-3, then fell 4-6 in the second before bouncing back with a no-doubt 6-1 win in the third set. Grandke has now won his last nine matches.
The Cougars are now 27-1 all-time against the Eagles.
