AZUSA, Calif. - No. 24 Azusa Pacific improved to 2-0 to start the season, after the Cougars dispatched of visiting Pomona-Pitzer by a 6-1 score on Saturday afternoon.
The day started with doubles finishing in order. In the No. 1 matchup, the Cougars' No. 24 nationally-ranked duo of Elias Eimilio Walter and
Miha Velicki earned a 6-3 win, but a Sagehen victory at No. 2 turned the No. 3 match into the point-decider.
Soeren Grandke and
Brody Bohren stepped up and performed in the clutch for the Cougars, as the duo battled to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Grandke and Bohren took control, winning by a 7-2 tally to capture the win and put Azusa Pacific in the driver's seat heading into singles.
Grandke would then secure the first singles point of the match at No. 3, where he cruised to a 6-1 first set, and then won 6-4 in the second set. At No. 5,
Constantin Barth won in straights sets as well, winning 6-2, 6-1.Â
Walter proved to be the match-clincher for Azusa Pacific at No. 1, where he went 6-2, 6-2 to win the fourth point and shut the door on the Sagehens.
With the match already in hand, the Cougars added two more points off of wins from Velicki at No. 2 (6-3, 6-0) and
Max Schmidhauser at No. 6. Schmidhauser battled to a win in super tiebreak fashion after coming back from a first set defeat (5-7(5-7), 6-2, 1-0(10-6)).
Up Next: Next Saturday, the Cougars will visit Point Loma. The match is scheduled to start at 1:00 pm in San Diego.
