SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Azusa Pacific traveled to Point Loma on Saturday, and the Cougars headed back to Azusa with an important 4-3 win over the Sea Lions. With the victory, Azusa Pacific is off to a 3-0 start.
Point Loma captured the first win of the afternoon, opening doubles with a 6-2 win at No. 2. Needing to win both of the remaining matches to snag the doubles point, the Cougars did just that, with
Miha Velicki and
Elias Emilio Walter winning 6-4 at No. 1, and
Brody Bohren and
Soeren Grandke securing the match-clinching point for the second-consecutive time with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
The battle was just beginning, with the two teams alternating victories in singles to keep the match competitive from start to finish. The No. 1 showdown was the first to finish, with Point Loma leveling the match score at 1-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 win. Walter would give the Cougars the lead right back at No. 2, where he won in straight-sets (6-3, 6-3).Â
After a Sea Lions win over at No. 3, Grandke took the lead right back for the Cougars by not only winning in straight-sets, but winning both by way of a tiebreak. He won the first set by a 7-2 score in the tiebreak, and then secured the point with an 8-6 triumph in the second set tiebreak.
With the score tied at 3-3, it all came down to the matchup of a pair of Germans that both call the city of Stuttgart home.
Constantin Barth represented the Cougars, while Lukas Schuster fought for Point Loma. The first set saw Schuster get the upper hand, as he won 6-3. Barth answered back in the second set, holding off Schuster for a 7-5 win to force a third and final match-deciding set. When all was said and done, it was Barth who emerged the victor, as he closed out the afternoon with a clutch 6-4 set win to secure the fourth and final point for the Cougars.
Up Next: After their trip south, the Cougars will now head north to Santa Barbara, where they will meet former GSAC rival and newest member of the PacWest Conference, Westmont. That match is set to start at noon this Monday (Feb. 12).Â
