SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific started the week off strong with a 5-2 victory at Westmont on Monday afternoon. The Cougars had to fight their way back after losing the doubles point, but left no doubt on the courts, taking five out of six singles sets.
The Warriors got off to a quick start, securing the doubles point at No. 2 and No. 3 with scores of 6-2 to take a 1-0 match lead.
Despite dropping the first set at singles No. 1, Elias Emilio Walter came soaring back taking the next sets by a 6-1 and 6-2 decision, evening the match score at 1-1. Then at singles No. 2, Miha Velicki fought off a tiebreaker in the first set, winning the tiebreak 7-6, before taking the second set 6-1 to give the Cougars a 2-1 advantage.
The Cougars fell in singles No. 3 to even the score at 2-2, but Soeren Grandke came up with a victory in singles No. 4, winning the first set 6-1 followed by another tiebreak, which he won by way of a 7-4 triumph, giving the Cougars a 3-2 lead.
In singles No. 5, Constantin Barth won in straight-sets (6-1, 6-1) followed by Brody Bohren at singles No. 6, taking another straight-set victory (6-3, 7-5) to close out the day. The Cougars secured the 5-2 road victory, continuing their perfect start to the 2024 season.
Barth and Walter are both undefeated in singles to start the season. Walter is 2-0 at both No. 1 and No. 2, while Barth 2-0 at No. 5 and 1-0 at No. 6.
Azusa Pacific leads all-time match ups with Westmont 37-1 and they are currently on a 10 match win streak. This is also their 15th win on the road in Santa Barbara, only losing one time to the Warriors on their home court since 1998. Today's match marked the first time since 2012 in which the two teams took to the courts as members of the same conference, as the two schools were former rivals in the NAIA as members of the GSAC before the Cougars left for the NCAA in 2013. This year, Westmont has joined the Division II ranks in the PacWest Conference.
