AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific secured a 4-2 win over Westcliff on Friday afternoon despite losing the doubles point. The Cougars came back and won four of the five singles points to take the match.
The win improves the Cougars' record to 5-0 this season. This was also the first time that Azusa Pacific has faced Westcliff in program history.Â
To start the match, Westcliff's duo of Felix Veyhle and Max Mueller won their match at No. 2 doubles (6-4) as the Warriors' No. 3 duo of Maxence Kupfert and Matthew Shaw sealed the doubles point with a 6-4 win.
Down 1-0 heading into singles was not a problem for the Cougars as they got to work fast. Elias Emilio Walter secured Azusa Pacific's first point of the day with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Westcliff's Borna Devald at No. 2 singles. Walter remains undefeated in singles this season.
The momentum continued for the Cougars as Constantin Barth won his match 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Westcliff was able to secure one more point with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles to tie the match at 2-2 but Azusa Pacific never faltered.
Soeren Grandke took his match 7-6(7-5), 6-4 at No. 3 singles followed by a 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) win at No. 1 singles from Miha Velicki to clinch the match for the Cougars.
