Straight To The Point

Azusa Pacific men's tennis defeated Colorado Mesa 7-0 at home on Thursday.

AZUSA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific welcomed Colorado Mesa to the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex on Thursday, defeating them in sweeping fashion 7-0. The Cougars claimed five of the six singles matches via straight-set victories.

How it Happened: The Cougars jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after earning the doubles point. Cole Rassner and Brody Bohren won 6-2 on No. 2, followed by Miha Velicki and Elias Emilio Walter winning their set on No. 1 6-3 to clinch the point. The Cougars played out the rest of doubles and Constantin Barth and Soeren Grandke won 7-6 via a 2-0 tiebreak.

To start off singles, Grandke wasted no time winning in straght-sets 6-1,6-1 at No. 4. Walter followed with another straight-set win, via 6-1,6-2 to remain undefeated in singles this year. 

On No. 1, Velicki won 6-2,6-2 to give the Cougars a 4-0 lead. An intense match on No. 3. was brewing as Rassner took the first set 6-2 before taking the second set 7-6 via a triumphant tiebreak, which he ultimately won 14-12.

Schmidhauser then took his match on No. 5 in straight-set fashion once again, 6-4, 6-2. To close out the day, Albertus Du Plessis won the first set 7-5 before falling in the second set 4-6. He was then victorius in the super tie break, 10-7. 

By the Numbers: Azusa Pacific is now 9-0 in all-time match ups against Colorado Mesa. Walter remains undefeated in singles on the year (6-0) and Max Schmidhauser picked up his second victory of the season in singles (2-0). Rassner also earned his first victory of the season on singles No. 3. and du Plessis collected a victory in his first appearance in singles this year at No. 6. 

Up Next: Azusa Pacific now 7-0 on the season and will host Grand Valley State this Monday, March 4th at 2:00 p.m.
