AZUSA, Calif. – The scoreboard at the Cougar Soccer Complex is only two years old, and it got its stiffest workout to date as the men's team put up their best tally in 15 years, defeating Chaminade by a 7-1 final Thursday evening. Six different Cougars found the back of the net.
"Tonight's was a great performance from the entire team" said head coach
Dave Blomquist. "We got off to a great start with an early goal and that sparked our attacking confidence. Our team chemistry and work rate was outstanding through the 90 minutes."
How It Happened: The Cougar attack was relentless in the first half, taking a mere 74 seconds to earn a penalty kick, which
Andrew Gomez buried in the bottom right corner of the goal to put the home team ahead. Just four minutes later,
Luis Solis crossed the ball in to
Gabriel Oropeza, who quickly doubled the advantage. A mere 60 seconds after that goal, the lead would grow from two to three as Mario Shuteriqui put home a pass from
Kaleb Abara. And the opening onslaught would be capped off in the 12th minute by Gomez's second goal of the night, this one off a corner kick from Oropeza. Oropeza would pick up a second assist before the half was over, finding a cutting
Sean Romo in the box for his second goal of the year to make the lead 5-0 at halftime.
The Cougars employed some players in unusual spots in the second half, and it paid further dividends as
Raul Lavado picked up an assist on a goal by
Gavin Chagnon just over 10 minutes into the second half. And after Chaminade found its way onto the scoreboard late, the exclamation point on the evening would be delivered by Abara, who headed home a feed from
Zedan Mutlu for the seventh goal of the evening by the home side shortly before the final whistle.
By the Numbers: The seven goals the Cougars scored are the most they have registered in a game in exactly fifteen years, as on this date in 2009 they defeated San Diego Christian 8-0.  Azusa Pacific outshot Chaminade 21-9, including putting 16 shots on target. Goalkeeper
Alexis Rodriguez made four saves in the contest. The Cougars have won six consecutive meetings with the Silverswords, and remain unbeaten in 12 all-time meetings (10-0-2).
Up Next:  zusa Pacific (4-7-1, 3-3-1 PacWest) finishes off the home portion of the schedule Saturday evening when it hosts Concordia at 5:00 p.m. The team will be honoring the 12 members of their senior class before kickoff.
