Three Chords and the Truth

Azusa Pacific knocked down a season-high 17 three-pointers in a 101-74 win at Chaminade on Thursday night.

HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Azusa Pacific improved to 17-3 overall and 11-0 in conference action, after the Cougars knocked down a season-high 17 three-pointers in a 101-74 win over Chaminade.

Kelly Heimburger finished with a double-double, scoring a game-high 18 points and securing 10 rebounds. Eight different Cougars made a three in the game, led by five triples from Paige Uyehara and four from Amayah Kirkman. Uyehara finished with 17 points and added five assists, while Kirkman tallied 16 points, three steals and three assists. Off the bench, Sabrina Belquist and Kayden Casey each knocked down a pair of triples. Belquist finished with 12 points and six rebounds, while Casey scored a season-high eight points. Erika Kelly had six points and five rebounds.

How It Happened: The Cougars would find themselves trailing 24-19 after the first quarter of play, but the visitors would flip the script in the second quarter by scoring 31 points on 12-for-21 shooting, including 6-for-11 from distance. The Cougars held the Silverswords to just 14 points in the second, and Azusa Pacific entered halftime with a 50-38 lead.

The Cougars remained in control in the third quarter, with Chaminade pulling no closer than 14 points in the period. With just over three minutes to play in the third, Belquist converted on a fastbreak layup to give the Cougars their first 20 point lead of the contest at 71-51.

Azusa Pacific closed the game out in the fourth by out-scoring the Silverswords by a 26-16 margin, and the Cougar lead was 19 or more for the remainder of the game. The Cougars made eight of their 17 threes in the second half.

By the Numbers: The Cougars' previous season-high for three-pointers made was 12, which they also did against Chaminade in a 82-55 home win earlier this month. Not only did the Cougars make a season-high 17 threes tonight, but they posted their best three-point percentage of the campaign at 46% (17-for-37). Azusa Pacific finished with 24 assists, which matches its season-high. The Cougars posted overwhelming advantages in points off turnovers (28-8), second chance points (26-11), and bench points (42-16). All 12 Cougars that played in the game scored.
