AZUSA, Calif. - For the seventh consecutive year, the PacWest Track & Field Championships ended with both of Azusa Pacific's track & field teams standing together on top of the podium and hoisting up a pair of conference championship trophies, as the Cougars swept the team titles again (x7).Â
On day two, the women's team had five athletes finish atop the podium in their respective events, while the men's team produced four individual conference champions. For the women,
Esther Conde-Turpin became the conference high jump and 100 hurdles champion, placing first in both events. In the high jump, Conde-Turpin won with a clearance of 1.73m (5' 8"), which ranks her second nationally in the event. In the 100 hurdles, Conde-Turpin had a winning time of 13.22 seconds that not only breaks the PacWest meet record, but it is the second-fastest time in the country this season. At the conclusion of the meet, Conde-Turpin was named the Women's Field Athlete of the Meet.
Alongside Conde-Turpin's honor,
Jaylah Walker was chosen as the Women's Track Athlete of the Meet, as she won the 200 meters and was in both of the Cougars' relay teams that earned spots on the podium. In the 200, Walker won with a personal best 23.71 seconds, which met the provisional standard and placed her at No. 11 nationally for the event. Walker has now earned six first-place finishes at the PacWest Championships across her career, however, this season is her first title in the 200, as she had not ran the race at the conference meet since 2017.
In the heptathlon,
Luisa Fischer won the event by over 1,000 points, posting a total of 5,247 over the seven events. Fischer's performance moves her up to No. 7 nationally for the heptathlon, as she is one of four Cougars ranked in the top-7 for the event. On day two of the hep, Fischer set new career marks in the long jump (5.45m/17'10 ¾") and 800 (2:26.27).
Alayna Verner claimed the top spot on the podium in the 400, after she set a new personal best time of 53.59 seconds. Her career effort ranks her fifth in the nation. In the 400 hurdles,
Kiayra Holmes not only won the event at 1:00.74, but it also hit the provisional standard and has her ranked No. 15 nationally.Â
Ben Sumner led the way on the men's side, winning two events and setting a meet record in the process. Sumner's PacWest record came in the 800, where he finished at a time of 1:50.46. Currently, Sumner is ranked sixth in the nation at the distance (1:48.81). Sumner also won the 1500, crossing the finish line at 3:50.22. The men's team broke two meet records on Saturday, with
Felix Perrier winning the 5K with a PacWest record race of 14:28.44.Â
Raymon Harper became a three-time PacWest high jump champion, as he won the event with a clearance of 2.03m (6' 7 ¾"). Harper was the high jump champ in 2019 and 2021. Currently, he is ranked 13th nationally with a season-best jump of 2.10m (6' 10 ¾").Â
