Box Score TEMPE, Ariz. - Azusa Pacific was beat by No. 7 Michigan on Saturday morning, falling by an 18-6 tally in the second of three games for the Cougars this weekend at the ASU Cross Conference Challenge.Â
Madeline Schultz led the Cougar attack, scoring four goals on eight attempts. Maritza Ochoa finished with two assists. In goal, Daniela Herrero Miralles had nine saves, and she also secured three steals.
How It Happened: Less than a minute into the contest, the Wolverines would score to make it 1-0. Trailing by a 2-0 score, Azusa Pacific put its first point on the board when Schultz put one in the cage with 5:06 to play in the first quarter. Over the next three minutes, Michigan added three more goals, and then Schultz scored for the second time to make it 5-2 with just over two minutes to play in the opening quarter. Michigan would convert on a penalty a few plays later, and the score after the first eight minutes of play was 6-2 Wolverines.
Schultz secured a hat trick just moments into the second quarter, making the score 6-3, but Michigan would answer with a goal on the ensuing possession to push the margin back to four. Montana White would make it 7-4 with a goal at the 6:36 mark, but five unanswered Wolverine goals stretched their lead up to 12-4. With 1:44 left before halftime, Kyra Kahahawai scored on a powerplay, and it would be the final goal of the first half, sending the two teams to halftime with a Michigan lead of 12-5.
In the third quarter, Michigan outscored the Cougars by a 5-0 tally, and Azusa Pacific's lone goal of the second half came on a penalty shot conversion by Schultz with a little over a minute and a half to play in the game.
By the Numbers: Michigan scored on over half of its shot attempts (18-for-34, 53%), compared to a 25% success rate (6-for-24) for the Cougars. In powerplay situations, the Wolverines went 2-for-4, while Azusa Pacific was 1-for-8.
