APU Eliminated by SDSU in GCC Tournament Opener

Cougars fall 19-10 in GCC quarterfinal

FRESNO, Calif. — Azusa Pacific fell to No. 16 and #3 seed San Diego State 19–10 in the opening round of the GCC Tournament on Friday at the Fresno State Aquatics Center. The Cougars kept pace early with a six-goal first half behind Jessie Nelson and Audrey Dexter, but the Aztecs used a six-goal second quarter and a five-goal third to pull away.

Azusa Pacific traded blows with San Diego State early, matching the Aztecs through the opening quarter.

Jessie Nelson got the Cougars on the board with a goal off an assist from Montana George, and Evelyne Prado and Audrey Dexter each added first-period scores to keep APU within one at 4–3 after the opening frame.

The Cougars briefly kept pace in the second quarter, as Bailey Hollick scored on an assist from Jaeden Johnson and George found the back of the cage off a feed from Hollick. Dexter added her second goal of the game late in the period, but San Diego State responded with a surge, scoring six times in the quarter to take a 10–6 lead into halftime.

San Diego State extended its advantage in the third, opening the half with four straight goals to break the game open. Nelson stopped the run with her second goal of the day, assisted by Kohia Rego, but the Aztecs answered again to push the lead to 15–7 heading into the final period.

In the fourth, Prado and George each added their second goals of the contest, and Nelson completed her hat trick with a late score, but the Cougars were unable to close the gap as San Diego State maintained control down the stretch.

Nelson led Azusa Pacific offensively with three goals, while Prado, Dexter and George each added two. Hollick also found the back of the cage and contributed an assist, and Johnson recorded two assists to help facilitate the attack.

In the cage, Daniela Herrero Miralles recorded nine saves against 19 goals allowed as the Cougars faced 36 shots from the Aztecs.
