AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific hosted Division I Ball State on Monday afternoon, and the Cardinals were able to hold off the Cougars by a 4-3 final score.
Ball State went up 1-0 to start the afternoon, taking two of the three doubles matches. Azusa Pacific was able to claim a win at No. 2, where Eleonora Liga and Lilla Plasek picked up a 7-5 win, however, the lone doubles point had already been clinched by the Cardinals.
Coming off of a win in doubles, Liga carried her confidence into her No. 1 singles matchup. Playing against Emma Peeler, Liga was dominant in straight sets, taking the first 6-1 and then shutting Peeler out 6-0 in the second. Liga's win brought the overall match score to a 1-1 tie.
Ball State would go on to win on three-consecutive courts in straight sets (No. 5, No. 6, No. 3), which gave the Cardinals the necessary four points to secure the match win.
The Cougars were able to pick up two more points with super tiebreaker victories on court No. 4 and No. 2. At No. 4, April Wong claimed a 6-3 first set win, dropped the second 5-7, but roared back with an impressive 10-2 triumph in the super tiebreak. Over at No. 2, Madison Kane bounced back from a 6-7 (4-7) loss in set one with a 6-4 second set win. In the super tiebreaker, Kane posted a 10-5 victory to improve her individual record.
Up Next: Now 5-4 this season, the Cougars are looking forward to a month of March in which they will play 10 more home matches. The homestand continues this Thursday, March 10, when Michigan Tech visits Azusa for a 2:30 pm match.
