LONG BEACH, Calif. – Azusa Pacific closed out its competition at the Beach Opener on Saturday, and the Cougars had impressive showings across multiple events. Not only did the Cougars have a few athletes meet provisional standards, but Azusa Pacific also had a handful of top-10 finishes amongst a field that included several Division I programs.
Â
In the men's high jump, Raymon Harper emerged as the event champion with a clearance of 2.06m (6' 9"). Not only did the leap secure him a first-place finish, but it surpassed the provisional mark of 2.05m to put him on the national qualifying list early in the outdoor season. Chin Agina, the reigning national champion in the women's high jump, took second place on the women's side with a clearance of 1.75m (5' 8 ¾"), which matches the provisional mark that she set at the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers meet during the first weekend of the outdoor season.
Â
On the track, two Cougars put up provisional times on the women's side. In the 1500, Jenny Sandoval ran a lifetime best time of 4:32.35, which earned her a second-place finish in the event. In the 400 hurdles, Jordan Hammond delivered a provisional-worthy race of 1:02.14 to finish fourth. For Hammond, it was her first time running the 400 hurdles at Azusa Pacific.Â
Â
In addition to the provisional marks & times set by Cougars, Azusa Pacific had significant representation amongst the top-10 finishers across the various events. Between the men and women, 23 Cougars were among the first 10 finishers in their respective events.
