Back in the Groove

Azusa Pacific got back in the win column with a 7-0 sweep of Colorado Mesa on Saturday afternoon.

AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific got back to its winning ways on Saturday afternoon, sweeping visiting Colorado Mesa by a 7-0 score. With the win, the Cougars improve to 9-6 this season.

The first winners of the match were Madison Kane and Carolyn Brooner, who played for just the second time together this season. At No. 1 doubles, Kane and Brooner picked up a 6-3 win over Makenna Livingston and Macy Richards. On the next court over at No. 2, Lilla Plasek and Eleonora Liga delivered the point-clinching win with a 6-3 triumph. Plasek and Liga, who have played the last seven matches together at No. 2, now have a record of 3-1. Audrey Stewart and April Wong provided the exclamation mark to the Cougars strong doubles performance, with the pair winning the No. 3 match by a 6-4 score.

To start off singles, Liga won the No. 1 matchup in straight sets (6-1, 6-1). Liga, who has a 13-1 singles record (all matches played at No. 1), has taken 12 of those matches in straight sets. Stewart would put the Cougars up by an overall score of 3-0 with a straight set (6-3, 6-4) at No. 4, which put Azusa Pacific in position to clinch the match with another singles victory.

The Cougars would not have to wait long, as Brooner took care of business at No. 3, defeating Maike Waldburger in straight sets (6-2, 6-2).

With the match already in hand, the Cougars would close out the sweep with a straight set win by Mikaela Mueller at No. 6 (6-2, 6-3), and super tiebreak wins by April Wong at No. 2 (6-4, 4-6, 10-4) and Katherine Nguyen at No. 5 (7-6, 5-7, 10-7).

Up Next: Today's match marked the end of a very busy stretch for the Cougars, as they had played six matches in eight days. Now, the Cougars will have a week to rest before they host rival Biola on Saturday, March 26 in Azusa.
