AZUSA, Calif.-- On Saturday morning, the Cougars were able to pick up a 5-2 win over No. 10 Biola to improve to 10-6 overall. Today's result also avenged a loss for the Cougars in February down in La Mirada.
The Cougars opened with the first win of the match in doubles. On court No. 3, Katherine Nguyen and Carolyn Brooner put together a 6-2 win over the Eagles, followed by a 6-3 win on court No. 1 for the duo of Madison Kane and Elenora Liga to put Azusa Pacific up 1-0.
Kane then picked up the team's first singles win of the day (6-3, 3-0) at No. 2, to give the Cougars a 2-0 match lead. The Cougars would earn two more consecutive wins with Brooner (6-2, 6-0) at No. 4, and Liga clinched the match with a 6-3 and 6-2 straight-set triumph on court No. 1. Liga was recently ranked No. 4 in the ITA nationals singles rankings, and she is now 14-0 overall in her singles matches.
After the Cougars secured the win with the first four points, Nguyen went on to win her match (6-4, 6-0) at No. 6. The Eagles were able to secure two wins at No. 3 and No. 5 courts but it was too late to come back.
"I am proud of the way that our team battled today," said head coach Mark Bohren, "Biola is a very strong team, and it required us to play very well to get the win."
Homecoming Success: The Cougars' win today helped contribute to an undefeated 8-0 weekend for home athletic events on Homecoming. Yesterday, both baseball and softball swept their doubleheaders, while today, softball swept another doubleheader and both tennis teams earned the victories. Azusa Pacific also went 5-0 against Biola this weekend, as tennis' two wins with baseball beating the Eagles in the doubleheader yesterday and a road game today secured the sweep. Azusa Pacific holds a more than comfortable lead in the Cornerstone Cup rivalry series with Biola, and the current series standings can be seen here.
Up Next: Azusa Pacific will host Academy of Art on Wednesday, March 30th with a 2:30pm start time.
