Cougars Make Most of Last Chance

Azusa Pacific track & field wrapped up its weekend of hosting the Last Chance Multi and Last Chance Twilight.

Azusa Pacific wrapped up competition in the Last Chance Multi and Last Chance Twilight on Saturday, with several Cougars hitting personal bests for either provisional or automatic marks, and Nixon Korir set the new school record for the steeplechase. Korir became the all-time leader in the event with a time of 9:00.01, which beat the previous record of 9:02.36 which was set by Peter Buscheck in 2015. For Korir, the record-breaking performance beat his previous career best by eight seconds. The performance also met provisional standards and moved Korir into the top-20 for the event.

In the high jump, Chin Agina capitalized on the final opportunity in advance of the NCAA Championships (May 27-29), as she cleared the highest mark of her career at 1.84m (6' ½"), which is the top performance in the nation this season and improves upon her previously held automatic mark of 1.77m (5' 9 ¾") that she achieved at the Bryan Clay Invitational earlier this season. Agina set her new career-best on her third and final attempt at the height. Her clearance on Saturday allowed her to go from third in school history to number two, as Jennifer Schwartz had a leap of 6' in 1985. The program's all-time leader in the high jump is Latrese Moffitt, who posted a height of 6' 3" in 1989.

Two other Cougars also set personal records for top-three national performances on Saturday, as Mechaela Hyacinth did it in the 100 and 200, while Jaylah Walker had a career day in the 100 hurdles. Hyacinth ran an automatic qualifying time of 11.49 in the 100, which moved her into second in the nation for the event. She was also able to move into second place in the 200, where she ran a provisional time of 23.59. Walker had a great race in the 100 hurdles, crossing the finish line with the third-fastest time in the country this season at 13.65 (provisional standard). The time also places Walker in second place all-time in program history for the event,

In the heptathlon, Alysa Henry delivered a gritty performance on Saturday to claim a provisional score of 5,071, which is the ninth-highest score in the nation this season. Henry was in a great position entering competition on Saturday morning after her marks and times on Friday, however, she suffered an injury in the first event of day two (long jump) that threatened her ability to continue. Henry not only overcame the setback by continuing on in the competition, but she finished the day with a career-best time in the 800 at 2:28.50. When all was said and done, Henry was able to move up from 15th on the national qualifying list to No. 9.

The Cougar women's team produced a total of 14 PR's on day two: Chin Agina (high jump - 1.84m/6' ½"), Eliana Saunders (high jump - 1.63m/5' 4 ¼"), Jaylah Walker (100H - 13.65), Kiayra Holmes (400 - 56.39), Marian Ledesma (400 - 58.12 | 800 - 2:11.09), Miah Moore (400 - 58.87 | 800 - 2:20.80), Mechaela Hyacinth (100 - 11.49 | 200 - 23.59), Molly Hake (5K - 18:59.99), Jordan Hammond (long jump - 5.60m/18' 4 ½"), and Alysa Henry (800 - 2:28.50).

In addition to Korir's record-breaking performance, two Cougars on the men's side of things had personal records that also met provisional standards, as Lincoln Krog and Chad Ponciano had career days in the decathlon.

Krog wrapped up this weekend's decathlon with a score of 7,041, which moves him up to 12th on the national qualifying list. On Saturday, Krog set three personal records, with one in the 110 hurdles (15.65), another in the discus (37.57m/123' 3"), and one more in the 1500 (4:45.11) to wrap his competition up. Ponciano ended the weekend with a final tally of 6,985, which places him 14th in the country. In the final event on Saturday evening, Ponciano ran the fastest 1500 of his career at 4:45.91, which beats his previous best by nearly seven seconds (4:52.90).

The Azusa Pacific men's track & field team set a total of 13 personal records on the final day of competition: Ryan Negrette (5K - 16:21.82), Marcus Dawal Jr. (800 - 1:55.90), Josh Nyberg (800 - 2:02.36), Andrew Rivas (800 - 2:05.48), Nixon Korir (Steeplechase - 9:00.01), Lincoln Krog (decathlon - 7,041 | 110 hurdles - 15.65 | discus - 37.57m/123' 3" | 1500 - 4:45.11), Chad Ponciano (decathlon - 6,985 | 1500 - 4:45.91), Riley Burns (5K - 15:11.22), and Dider Sandoval (5K - 15:19.40).
