AZUSA, Calif. -- Amanda Fassold and Jenny Sandoval highlighted a solid performance by Azusa Pacific track & field at the APU Invitational & Distance Carnival on Saturday, as the duo each broke a school record in their respective events. Fassold broke her own pole vault record for the second time this year, while Sandoval set the record in the 5k, the first time in which she has competed in the event as a Cougar.Â
Â
Fassold, who entered Saturday as the nation's No. 1 pole vaulter, cleared 14' (4.27m) to set the new program mark and reinforce why she is expected to compete for the national title later this spring. Her previous school record was 13' 9 ¼" (4.20m), which she set in the first meet of the season back in March.
Â
Sandoval, a transfer from San Jose State, is the new 5k record holder after she finished with an automatic-qualifying time of 16:01.41, which is the third fastest time in the nation this year. The previous school record was set by Jaime Canterbury in 2009, when she ran a time of 16:06.96. Sandoval became the third Cougar to clinch a spot for Outdoor Nationals this season, as Fassold and Mechaela Hyacinth (100 meters) have already punched their tickets.
Â
In addition to the record-breaking performances, the women's team had multiple track athletes either hit a provisional time for the first time this year, or improve on their previous provisional marks. Jaylah Walker was among that group, as she ran personal-records in both the 200 and the 400. In the 200, Walker ran the second-fastest time in the nation to this point, posting a time of 23.75. In that same race, Hyacinth ran a provisional and personal-best time of 23.99, which ranks her No. 4 nationally. Walker also turned in a top-five time nationally in the 400, where she ran a personal record of 54.76 to slot her at No. 3 in the nation. In the 100 hurdles, Jordan Hammond hit a provisional time, crossing the finish line with a time of 14.19.Â
Â
On the men's side, Daniel Bessolo, Jermel Jones II and Raymon Harper turned in provisional marks. On the track, Daniel Bessolo ran the 400 in a time of 47.07, which is a new personal-best and also moves him up to No. 4 in the country for the event. In the field events, Jermel Jones II had a great day with two personal-records, while Raymon Harper posted his first provisional mark of the season. In the long jump, Jones II was able to improve his provisional standing by leaping 24' 11" (7.59m), which is the fifth-longest mark of the season. Jones II also competed in the triple jump, where he set a new personal best of 48' 3 ½" which is good enough for a provisional mark. In the high jump, Harper was able to get his first provisional mark of the season, clearing 6' 9" (2.06m).Â
