Senior Day Triumph

No. 7 Azusa Pacific defeated No. 10 Hawai’i Pacific 4-1 to close out the regular season on senior day.

AZUSA, Calif. - The No. 7 Cougars defeated the No. 10 Sharks of Hawai'i Pacific by a score 4-1.

Following the women's top-10 victory earlier in the day on Saturday, the men looked to follow that up with a win of their own. The matchup began with an Azusa Pacific doubles sweep to secure the first point of the day. The pairing that set the tone for the Cougars was Jakob Schnaitter and Leyton Bohren. They worked quickly and ended their match, 6-1. Sam Sippel and Ryan Nuno put the Cougars up 1-0 on the Sharks by claiming their match, 6-4. The contest at No. 3 went unfinished.

The Cougars started off singles with a quick victory at No. 1. Schnaitter followed his impressive doubles victory by ending his matchup in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. In the first set of his contest, No. 4 Bohren was tied with his opponent by the score of 3-3. He got into a rhythm and went on to take the first set, 6-4. Bohren closed it out in the second set by winning 6-3. The Sharks took the contest at No. 5, which made the score 3-1 in favor of the Cougars. Rassner would take the final regular season singles victory for Azusa Pacific, as he clinched the match at No. 6. He took the first set by quickly ending it 6-1. Rassner's opponent, Cheng-Chieh Wang, fought back in set two. However, Rassner continued to battle and claimed the 6-4 win.

In the final regular season match of the year, the Cougars honored three seniors. Those recognized on Saturday were Ryan Nuno, Jakob Schnaitter, and Jesse Haas. The trio joined the Men's Tennis program in Fall of 2017. They have since tallied 72 wins over their four year careers'. This includes, in 2018, when they took home the PacWest Championship. That same year in 2018, they also made a trip to NCAA Nationals where they made a semi finals appearance. The contributions they made to Azusa Pacific Tennis Program will be long-lasting. They all served as captains for their final two years with the program, in which they brought leadership and hard work to the program. Nuno will finish his undergraduate degree in May, yet will continue to play for the Cougars as he pursues his graduate degree.

The Cougars finished their 2021 regular season undefeated against Division II opponents. They now display a record of 15-3. Azusa Pacific will now travel to Surprise, Arizona for the PacWest Tournament. The tournament will take place from April 22 until April 24 as the Cougars will represent as the No. 1 seed.
