Box Score SURPRISE, Ariz. - In a quarterfinal matchup at the PacWest Tournament, the Cougars picked up right where they left off in the regular season by defeating Colorado Mesa 4-0.Â
For the third match in a row, the Cougars secured the doubles point and held an early 1-0 lead heading into the singles matchups. Ryan Nuno and Sam Sippel gained their 13th win as a pairing on the season with a 6-2 victory at No. 2. After falling behind in their set 5-4, Jakob Schnaitter and Leyton Bohren fought back to secure the victory and put the Cougars up 1-0. They played at No. 1 and ended the match 7-5.Â
Schnaitter was the first to finish for Azusa Pacific in singles play. He cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1. Sippel also won his first set 6-1 at the No. 2 slot. In set two Sippel secured his singles victory by finishing with a score of 6-4. The Cougars now held all the momentum with a 3-0 lead. The clinching victory came from Ian Lee at the No. 5 position. Lee played an impressive match and battled in both sets. The final scores for his contest were 6-4, 6-3 as he helped send the Cougars to the semifinal match.Â
Top-ranked Azusa Pacific will now take on No. 4 seed Concordia on Friday, April 23 at 1:00 PM. This is a PacWest Tournament semifinal matchup, and the winner will advance to the championship contest on Saturday. The Cougars and Eagles have met twice on the 2021 season, as Azusa Pacific claimed victory in both matchups. Concordia holds a national ranking of No. 14 while the Cougars are No. 7.
