AZUSA, Calif. - No. 9 Azusa Pacific defeated Western New Mexico on Thursday afternoon by taking all finished matchups by a score of 4-0.
The Cougars defeated the Mustangs in the doubles portion as they secured one point going into the singles matches. In the No. 2 position Ryan Nuno and Sam Sippel started off hot for Azusa Pacific as they cruised to a 6-2 victory. The No. 1 pairing of Jakob Schnaitter and Leyton Bohren quickly followed by winning their matchup with a score of 6-3, to officially secure the doubles point for the Cougars. The No. 3 doubles match was hard fought with Ethan Smith and Dylan Parsley, however the set went unfinished as the Cougars already clinched the point in the first two doubles matchups.
Caden Samkutty started off his singles match by winning the first set 6-0. However, in the second set his opponent retired in the Cougars obtained the first singles points, that set started off by Samkutty going up 3-0. In the No. 4 singles matchup, Cole Rassner won in straight sets by way of the 6-0, 6-0 sweep, this gave the Cougars a 3-0 lead. The Cougars clinched the match in the No. 1 singles contest as Sam Sippel captured the first set 6-3. His opponent retired before the start of the second set, giving him the set victory and the Cougars the match victory. The No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 singles contests all went unfinished.
Azusa Pacific will return to action this Saturday, March 10 to take on rival Biola. The Cougars away match is set to take place at 1:00 PM, the match can be followed live here.
