#23 Pacific Defeats Cougars

Azusa Pacific lost 13-7 to #23 Pacific on Friday.

Coming off their undefeated run at the Fresno State Invitational, the (RV) Azusa Pacific Cougars (4-9) matched the #23 Pacific Tigers (3-11) goal-for-goal in the second half of Friday evening's contest, but fell an eventual 13-7 on the night.

Azusa Pacific's leading scorer, sophomore Milena Guzman, converted 50 percent of her shots and led the Cougars with two goals against the program's sixth Division I opponent of the season, bringing her season total to 16. Defensively, junior keeper Olivia Lott tallied five saves while the team held the Tigers to just 1-9 in power play.

Pacific opened the contest with a goal form Toula Falvey, but Guzman-Ortiz quickly leveled the score on Azusa Pacific's next possession with a shot from center of the five-meter line to the top left corner of the cage. Pacific answered with a goal by Ana Martinez do Amaral, but once again Azusa Pacific answered. With just under four minutes to play in the first quarter, Sarah Adams's initial shot rung off the crossbar back into Cougar hands and a quick push to sophomore Brianna Erickson on the left resulted in the team's second goal of the night.

However, the Tigers tacked on three more goals to close the first quarter and pushed their lead to 8-2 at the close of the second. The Cougars found their offensive stride once again in the second half though, ignited by a goal from junior Hannah Bradley, a one-skipper past the left hand of Pacific's keeper with 6:02 on the clock in the third to make it a 9-3 contest. Continuing to answer scores from Tigers, freshman Mattie Hertzog slotted a goal to the left post to move the score to 11-4 heading into the final period.

Stalemate for nearly the first four minutes of the fourth, Guzman Ortiz's second goal of the night, a back-hand shot to the left side of the cage, rebutted Pacific's opening goal of the period just sixteen seconds later. Following her, junior Shanna Stevonson buried a five-meter penalty shot to bring the game to 13-6, and junior Gabrielle Martinez won the one-on-one against Pacific's keeper with a lob over her head to bring the final score to 13-7.

The Cougars return to the pool on Thursday, March 12, against #5 UC Irvine at 7 p.m. inside the Anteater Aquatics Center in Irvine, California.
