Record-Setting Season Ends With A Win

Azusa Pacific won a program best 19 games in 2019, and the Cougars finished off the season with an 11-7 win over California Baptist in the GCC Tournament fifth-place game

FRESNO, Calif. – Azusa Pacific added its final touch on the record-setting season that 2019 has been, as the Cougars won their 19th game of the year with an 11-7 victory over California Baptist on Sunday morning in the GCC Tournament fifth-place game. The Cougars set the program record for most wins in a single season this year, as well as finished with a winning record (19-14) for the first time in program history.
 
Azusa Pacific dominated the third period to claim the win and fifth-place, as the Cougars broke a 4-4 halftime tie by scoring six unanswered goals in the period to take a 10-4 lead into the fourth and final period. California Baptist would score three goals in the fourth period, however, Azusa Pacific's lead was too big to overcome and the Cougars added one more goal in the fourth period as senior Mar Pastor Alvarez scored her third goal of the day.
 
Pastor Alvarez closed out her Cougar career by being named to the GCC All-Tournament team, as she finished the weekend with eight goals, nine drawn ejections and six steals to help lead the Cougars to a 2-1 record in the tournament.
 
In addition to Pastor Alvarez's dominant performance, the Cougars received a three assist and three steal effort from sophomore Hannah Bradley. Junior Sarah Adams also finished with three assists, while also scoring a goal. Freshman Milena Guzmán Ortiz had three steals and scored her team-leading 48th goal of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Lott earned the win, as she had 13 saves and two steals.
 
Up Next: Azusa Pacific's season has come to an end, and the Cougars will say goodbye to six seniors who helped deliver the best season in program history. Mar Pastor Alvarez, Jordan Hummingbird, Carinna Prince, Arianne Yeo, Annalise Batcheller, and Marissa Joerke all closed out their careers with a win. Despite the departure of these players, the future looks bright as many key players will be returning for the 2020 season.
