Azusa, Calif.-- The No. 15 APU men's tennis team pulled out an impressive 4-3 win over UCSD Friday afternoon with senior
Marnix Pluim coming through in the clutch with a third-set tiebreaker to lift the Cougars to victory at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Courts. As the Cougars notched its 20th win on the season, head coach
Mark Bohren claimed his 500th win at APU.
UCSD pulled out a tight doubles point, but the Cougars retaliated with two straight wins as they headed into singles. After a long fought battle with UCSD leading 3-2, APU's
Ronald Kang notched a win to set up Pluim's nail-biting clincher. With the win, APU improves 20-2 overall on the season.
Heading into doubles, the Cougars sprinted out to an early lift at the No. 2 spot with a 6-4 win from
Ryan Nuno and
Leyton Bohren. Shortly after, UCSD answered back at the top spot downing
Jakob Schnaitter and
Jesse Haas 6-4. At the No. 3 position, the tandem of
Ethan Smith and
Ronald Kang lost 7-6 (4) after a hard fought battle.
With UCSD leading 1-0 heading into singles, APU answered back at the No. 2 spot with
Ryan Nuno topping his opponent 6-0, 6-4.
Jakob Schnaitter followed up shortly after with a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 1 position. UCSD would make a move into the lead with wins on courts five and four next. Senior
Ronald Kang notched a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 win at court three to level the score 3-3. With all eyes on court six,
Marnix Pluim powered his way to an exciting 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2) victory to clinch the match for the Cougars.
Up next, the Cougars will take on PacWest rival Point Loma tomorrow, April 13 for its final regular season match at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Courts at 12:00 p.m.
