Cougars Split Second Half Of Point Loma Series

AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific split a doubleheader at home against Point Loma in a pair of one-run games, dropping the opener in extra innings, 4-3, before bouncing back in the seven-inning finale of the four-game nonconference series with a 2-1 victory.

Azusa Pacific lost three of four games of the series and is now 12-9 on the season, while Point Loma improved to 14-7.

What's Next: Azusa Pacific hosts Hawai'i Pacific in a four-game series which resumes PacWest Conference play, starting Thursday night at 5:00 p.m.

How It Happened (Game 1): In the first game, starting pitcher Nick Estrella gave up a two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning to break a scoreless stalemate. Estrella got into a jam in the sixth and left the game with the bases loaded and two out. Tripp Aversa came in and gave up a single that scored one run before getting the third out of the inning.

Estrella threw 5.2 innings while giving up three earned runs. He allowed five hits and three walks while striking out two. The lead for the Sea Lions was 3-0 before the Cougars began to chip away. Joe Quire Jr. led off the sixth with a base hit to right field before Justin Gomez followed with a single. With runners at first and second, Mychael Goudreau reached on a fielder's choice to shortstop, giving the Cougars runners at first and third with one out. Aaron Roose then grounded into a fielder's choice to third base for an RBI to make it 3-1, and the Cougars got another run back in the seventh when Griffen Herrera led off the inning with a double. Cole Kleszcz hit an RBI single to drive in Herrera, cutting the lead to 3-2.

Relievers Tripp Aversa and Kenneth Pettibone kept Point Loma scoreless in the seventh, eighth and ninth before Cole Kleszcz came back up with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning and skied one over the left field fence to tie the game at 3-3. The Cougars had a chance to win the game in the tenth inning after Justin Gomez hit a double with one out. With Gomez still at second with two outs, Austin Russ lined a base hit to right field but Gomez was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

In the top of the eleventh, David Wylie gave up a leadoff single before a sacrifice bunt got the runner into scoring position. A single gave the Sea Lions runners at first and third before Ricky Rivera came in with one out and gave up a single that scored a run before getting a ground ball double play to end the inning. Robert Ortiz III retired the Cougars in order in the bottom of the 11th to pick up the save for Point Loma.

How It Happened (Game 2): Azusa Pacific starter Declan Kearney threw a complete game and got the victory in the second game. Kearney dealt his way out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the third inning by getting Micah Pries to fly into a double play into shallow right center, where Cole Kleszcz made the catch before firing a bullet to catcher Justin Gomez to cut down Kyle Gracey trying to score to end the inning.

Kearney cruised through the next two innings by sitting the next six Sea Lion batters down. Azusa Pacific took the lead in the fifth inning when Mychael Goudreau hit his third solo homerun of the season to make it 1-0. Point Loma tied the game in the top of the sixth when Pries hit a solo home run, the only run allowed by Kearney in the game. In the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars got things started with a leadoff single from Osvaldo Tovalin before Cole Kleszcz doubled down the right field line with one out to put runners at second and third. Austin Russ was intentionally walked to load the bases before Joe Quire Jr. flew out to deep right center, scoring Tovalin from third to regain the lead on the sacrifice fly. Kearney came back out and shut the door in the seventh inning to complete the 2-1 victory.

Cole Kleszcz led the Cougars with three hits on the day, including his team-high sixth home run of the year.
