For the first time in program history, Azusa Pacific knocked off Golden Coast Conference opponent San Diego State, as the Cougars beat the #22 Aztecs 10-9 at the Aztec Invitational. Coming into Friday's matchup, Azusa Pacific was 0-7 all-time against San Diego State.
Â
The slim victory was a reflection of the match, as it was a back-and-forth affair with each team grabbing momentum, only to have the other take it back. The Cougars opened the match on a 3-0 run, following a five-meter penalty shot by junior
Mireia Tutusaus Alcaraz, a powerplay goal by senior
Annalise Batcheller, and an even-strength goal by senior
Mar Pastor Alvarez.
Â
However, the Aztecs would respond, scoring four straight goals to take a 4-3 lead with 6:48 remaining in the second period. San Diego State would not hold the lead for long, as Batcheller tied the game up with her second goal of the day, with 5:13 remaining in the second period. The Cougars would then take a 6-4 lead, as freshman Milena Guzmán Ortiz scored on a five-meter penalty shot with 4:41 left in the second period, and then junior
Sarah Adams scored with 3:09 left in the first half.
Â
As was the trend throughout, San Diego State seized the momentum back, scoring three straight goals to take a 7-6 lead with 3:36 left in the third period. The third period would come to a close with the score tied at 8-8, as Guzmán Ortiz and Adams would each score their second goal of the day, while San Diego State would score its fourth goal of the third period.
Â
In the fourth, it was the duo of Guzmán Ortiz and Adams who gave the Cougars the victory. Guzmán Ortiz opened the scoring in the fourth period, as she scored on a powerplay with 6:15 left in the match. The Aztecs would tie the score at 9-9, off of a five-meter penalty. The game-winning goal for the Cougars was scored by Adams, as she found the back of the net with 4:34 left in the match.
Â
Adams and Guzmán Ortiz led the way for the Cougars, as they each scored three goals on the match. Guzmán Ortiz also had two steals. Sophomore
Olivia Lott played all 32 minutes in goal for the Cougars, as she recorded nine saves.
Â
With the historic win, Azusa Pacific improves to 13-9, as well as 1-0 in Golden Coast Conference play. The Cougars will be right back in action at the Aztec Invitational tomorrow, as they take on #24 Bucknell at 8:00 a.m., and #14 UC San Diego at 1:00 p.m.
