Cougars Complete Second Straight Sweep

AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific completed the sweep of Hawai'i Hilo in a four-game Pacific West Conference series by taking both games of Saturday's doubleheader by scores of 17-2 and 3-1. The Cougars have now won nine in a row to improve to 20-9 on the season and 10-2 in conference play.

The Cougar offense produced 20 runs on the day to complete the sweep while holding the visiting Vulcans to just three runs on Saturday.

What's Next: The Cougars will face off against crosstown rival Biola next weekend in a four-game home series against the Eagles. It will be the first time this season the two teams will face off against each other.

How It Happened (Game 1): Leadoff hitter Cole Kleszcz homered in the bottom of the first inning to get the Cougars on the board first. The Cougars put up four more runs in the second inning, to start Tido Robles had an RBI double down the left field line before Casey Dykstra had an RBI single to make it 3-0. The Cougars weren't done in the inning as Cole Kleszcz got his second hit and second RBI of the afternoon with an RBI single to left center field before Osvaldo Tovalin hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field to increase the lead to 5-0 through two innings.

In the third inning, Mychael Goudreau and Joseph Kim singled with one out and came around to score on consecutive singles by Casey Dykstra and Cole Kleszcz who picked up their second and third RBIs of the game.

With the 7-0 lead the Cougars doubled the lead with a huge seven run fifth inning. Joseph Quire Jr. hit a two-RBI single to right field to make it 9-0, before Griffen Herrera doubled down the left field line for his first RBI of the game to make it 10-0. With the bases loaded and two outs in the inning senior shortstop Mychael Goudreau continued the onslaught with a two-run single. The two Cougars runners at first and second each moved up a base on a wild pitch before Joseph Kim then singled down the third baseline driving in the final two runs in the inning to make it 13-0.

In the sixth inning the Cougars added three more, Griffen Herrera hit a sacrifice fly to right field for the first run before Goudreau added to his RBI total with another run scoring single. The final Cougar run in the game scored via a wild pitch to make it 17-0 through six innings.

Starting pitcher Nick Estrella pitched six innings and got his fifth straight win on the season. Estrella was perfect through the first three innings and struck out four total and only allowed four Hawai'i Hilo baserunners in the outing. After him, Ricky Rivera gave up the two runs in the seventh inning before John Szczesny and Mike Snyder retired the final six for the Cougars, striking out a combined three (two for Snyder, one for Szczesny).

How It Happened (Game 2): Azusa Pacific got on the board first once again in the nightcap of the doubleheader. Griffen Herrera hit a solo home run to right field to lead off the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Starting pitcher Declan Kearney dealt in and out of trouble in the first two innings leaving five Vulcan runners on before retiring eight in a row from the end of the second inning all the way into the first batter in the fifth inning. The Cougars defense helped Kearney out in the fifth inning after he walked a batter with one out and allowed a double to deep center field. Only a fantastic relay from the Cougars on the double prevented the Vulcans from tying the game. Dykstra's strong throw from the wall in center field set up Goudreau to relay the ball home from shallow center field to catcher Justin Gomez who tagged the runner out at the plate. Kearney allowed a single that scored a run for Hawai'i Hilo in the next at bat before his night was over. Kearney finished throwing 4.2 innings allowing just one run and striking out three in the start and left with the game tied. The Cougars turned to Tayton Smith out of the bullpen, Smith got out of the fifth inning after getting a flyout before pitching a scoreless sixth inning.

With the game still tied in the bottom of the sixth, Joseph Quire Jr. hit a one out double before Griffen Herrera followed that up with a two-run shot to left field to take the lead. The home run was Herrera's second of the game and he drove in all three runs for the Cougars in the game.

Tayton Smith was relieved after allowing a lead-off walk in the seventh, Tripp Aversa came on and allowed a hit before getting the first out of the seventh on a bunt that Justin Gomez pounced on and got the lead runner at third for the first out of the inning. Aversa was then relieved by Spiro Valasakos who faced one Vulcan and walked him before Hayden Jorgenson came in with the bases loaded and one out. Jorgenson proceeded to strike out the next batter before getting a groundout to end the game and complete the series sweep for the Cougars.

Inside The Box Score: The Cougars outscored the Vulcans 52-5 in the series after putting on another impressive offensive display for the second series in a row, this is the most runs the Cougars have put up in a series this season. Griffen Herrera had a team high 11 RBIs in the series to put him tied for second on the team for the season with 25 (one behind Tovalin). As a team, Azusa Pacific was 53-for-135 (.393 batting average) in the series.
