AZUSA, Calif. -- Nick Estrella's Friday night start against Concordia got better and better into the night, and Azusa Pacific picked up a 9-1 win over the Eagles to start the non-conference series with back-to-back come-from-behind victories.
Estrella struck out 11 in eight innings, and he scattered a single run on eight hits and one walk, and he retired the final 12 batters he faced and set seven of those dozen Eagles down on strikes before turning the final frame over to the bullpen.
The series now shifts to Concordia, although Saturday's originally-scheduled doubleheader has been moved to Monday due to a high likelihood of rain this weekend. The teams will wrap up the four-game series with a Monday doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m.
All nine hitters in the Cougars' starting lineup hit safely, with Joe Quire Jr. recording a team-high three hits to lead Azusa Pacific's 9-run, 14-hit attack. Cole Kleszcz went 2-for-4 with a triple and scored three runs, and Mychael Goudreau was 2-for-4 with 2 runs and 3 RBIs to help spark the offense.
With Friday's win, Azusa Pacific improves to 10-5 overall, while Concordia is now 4-9.
How It Happened: Concordia's only run came on Tony Garcia's solo home run in the second inning, but the Cougars answered in the bottom half of the frame when Cole Kleszcz led off with a triple to right-center and scored on Joseph Kim's infield grounder to tie the game at 1-1.
Estrella eliminated baserunners in the second and third inning and left the bases loaded to get out of the fourth inning. As he posted zeroes to the scoreboard, Azusa Pacific's offense hung four runs in the bottom of the third and added another in the fifth just as Estrella hit his groove.
Justin Gomez, Osvaldo Tovalin, and Griffen Herrera hit consecutive singles to start the bottom of the third inning, and Kleszcz was hit by pitch to load the bases with no outs. Joseph Kim delivered a two-run single through the right side, and Mychael Goudreau brought another run home with a sacrifice fly that made it 5-1.
Casey Dykstra drove in another run in the fifth with a double down the right-field line, extending the lead to 6-1, and the Cougars added three more in the sixth on run-producing singles from Goudreau and Austin Russ for the final 9-1 margin. Relief pitcher Spiro Valasakos finished off Estrella's gem with a perfect ninth inning.
Inside The Box Score: Osvaldo Tovalin's 2-for-5 effort was his team-high eighth multi-hit game of the season… Tovalin has hit safely in all 15 games this season, and his hitting streak extending into last season is now at 17 games as he leads the Cougar offense with a .435 (27-for-62) batting average this season… Azusa Pacific has won five straight home games after splitting a season-opening doubleheader against Cal State Monterey Bay and dropping the series opener against Colorado Christian two weeks ago… The Cougars have gone errorless in 34 consecutive innings at home after playing error-free defense for the fourth consecutive home game… Azusa Pacific's pitching staff has registered double-digit strikeouts six times this year, recording a season-high 12 strikeouts both Thursday and Friday against Concordia.
What's Next: The rescheduled doubleheader with Concordia will now kick off a six-game week, which will all be counted as non-conference games. After visiting Concordia on Monday, Azusa Pacific visits Point Loma for a Friday, March 8, doubleheader before hosting Point Loma for another doubleheader on Saturday, March 9. Although both Concordia and Point Loma are PacWest rivals, the first four-game series with each opponent will be considered non-conference games, as the teams will meet again for a four-game PacWest series later in the season.
