TURLOCK, Calif. -- Stanislaus State salvaged the final game of the three-game series with No. 8 Azusa Pacific after the Cougars swept Friday's doubleheader, claiming a 3-0 win behind a pitching gem from true freshman Rylan Tinsley.
Tinsley tossed six shutout innings, surrendering two hits and one walk with seven strikeouts to pick up the win in his first collegiate start, and the Warriors' relief ace Chase Wheatcroft worked around three hits in the final three innings of shutout relief to earn his second save of the year.
Azusa Pacific starter A.J. Woodall surrendered one run on five hits with five strikeouts in five innings in his first start of the season for the Cougars.
With the loss, Azusa Pacific falls to 3-2 on the year, while Stanislaus State improves to 3-2 after bouncing back from Friday's doubleheader sweep.
How It Happened: Tinsley allowed just one baserunner in the first four innings, a two-out walk to Casey Dykstra in the top of the third, and the Warriors got on the board in the bottom of the third by cashing in a leadoff walk to Michael Wyatt. A sacrifice bunt and infield single moved Wyatt to third with one out, and Vinny Margiotta laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt down the first base line to score Wyatt from third.
Griffen Herrera singled in the top of the fifth for the first hit off Tinsley, and Joe Quire Jr. added a two-out single to put runners at first and third. However, after running the count full to Dykstra, Tinsley got out of trouble with one of his seven strikeouts. Stanislaus State pushed across a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth with Matt Elser's two-run home run to left with one out.
The Cougars put runners on base in each of the final three frames against Wheatcroft. Herrera was hit by pitch with two outs in the top of the seventh, and Austin Russ singled through the right side before Wheatcroft got out of trouble in the seventh with an inning-ending strikeout. In the top of the eighth, pinch-hitter Joseph Kim reached on a groundball to the shortstop, whose throw pulled the first baseman off the bag. However, Wheatcroft got a double-play ball back to the shortstop and got out of the eighth on a Justin Gomez fly out.
Cole Kleszcz and Osvaldo Tovalin started the ninth with consecutive singles, but Wheatcroft got another double-play grounder to shortstop before finishing off the game with an infield popup.
Inside The Box Score: The Cougars' five hits came from five different players, as Tovalin and Kleszcz each hit safely to start the year with five-game hitting streaks… Junior righthanders Ricky Rivera and Anthony Mayorga made their first of the season, with Rivera striking out one in the Warriors' two-run sixth before Mayorga retired all six hitters he faced in two perfect innings of relief… Azusa Pacific has won or split 17 of its past 18 regular-season series.
What's Next: The Cougars return home for a four-game nonconference series against Colorado Christian starting on Thursday, Feb. 14.
