Box Score AZUSA, Calif. -- The Azusa Pacific women's tennis team opened its season against No. 4-ranked Hawai'i Pacific Wednesday morning at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex after the teams' originally scheduled match earlier this week was postponed for rain. The No. 13-ranked Cougars lost a narrow 4-3 decision to open the 2019 campaign.
RESULTS
DOUBLES: The No. 4-ranked Sharks got off to a quick start which ultimately made the difference in the team match. Hawai'i Pacific jumped out to early leads and won two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. The No. 2 doubles match was the first off the courts, as
April Wong and
Anna Savchenko posted a 6-1 victory.
At the third spot,
Petra Ivankovic and
Audrey Stewart pushed the set into a tiebreaker but dropped a 7-6 decision in a 7-1 tiebreaker defeat.
SINGLES: As the matches unfolded, momentum shifted back and forth as three of the matches went to three sets and the decisive No. 6 singles match went to tiebreakers in both sets.
Sophomore
Jacky Wagner posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Hawai'i Pacific's Debora Echeverria at the No. 4 slot.
Also coming out on top was
April Wong in the No. 5 slot as she dominated two of the three sets in a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 victory.
The Cougars got their third team point as
Petra Ivankovic rallied for a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win at the No. 1 singles spot.
Kara Hinton dropped her first set, 6-4, in the second position, but battled well to take the second set to a tiebreaker before falling 7-6 (7-3).
Freshman
Audrey Stewart played another close match during singles at the No. 6 spot. The freshman fell 7-6 (7-3), and 7-6 (7-5) to HPU's Nicole Ballach.
Anna Savchenko also went to three sets, dropping No. 3 singles in a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 finish.
