Saturday Split

WHITTIER, Calif. – Closing out their final non-conference day of the season, Azusa Pacific played a pair of games hosted at Whittier College.

After falling in the opener against Brown the Cougars responded with a high scoring win in the second game against the home team.

After Saturday's pair of contests, Azusa Pacific's record stands at 13-12 with their next game at California Baptist on Wednesday, March 28.

Brown 8, Azusa Pacific 6

Despite never finding the lead throughout the contest, the Cougars fought back time-and-time again but couldn't complete their rally.

Brown scored the game's first two goals but net-finders from Mar Pastor and Arienne Yao knotted the scored at the end of the first stanza. The team's split two goals in the second period. Brown scored with 2:41 left in the period but a Britni Tisdale goal with just over a minute left in the quarter tied the game at intermission.

With a strong third period, Brown created some separation on the scoreboard. They scored the first four goals in the stanza. However, the pesky Cougars remained positive as the finished the quarter with three goals in the last 4:10 as Hannah Bradley, Mireia Tutusaus Alcaraz and Bradley, again, scored.

Down 7-6 entering the final eight minutes the Cougars couldn't keep their offensive momentum. Azusa Pacific had three extra-person opportunities but couldn't convert. However, defensively they were able to keep Brown off the scoreboard until they found the back of the cage with 1:01 remaining.

Azusa Pacific 15, Whittier 11

The second highest scoring game of the season went the Cougars way as Sarah Adams and Hannah Bradley each scored five goals.

Whittier took a 4-2 lead with 59 ticks left in the first quarter but net-finders by Adams and Annalise Batcheller with 39 and three seconds respectively left tied the score. Whittier scored the first three goals of the second quarter but Adams found the back of the cage for the final two goals of the stanza as the home team took a 7-6 edge at the break.

Offensively the final 16 minutes were played in the Cougars favor. The teams split the first two goals of the third frame but then a run of three straight net-finders gave Azusa Pacific the lead for good. Bradley scored a pair just over a minute apart then Britni Tisdsle ended the mini-spurt with 4:22 remaining. Whittier remained in the hunt as the high scoring period came to a close with each team find the back of the cage twice in the last 3:51. Heading into the last period, the scoreboard read 12-10 for the Cougars.

Whittier pulled within one as they scored the first goal on a power play chance less than a minutes into the fourth period. Fittingly enough Bradley and Adams secured the Azusa Pacific. Bradley scored once and Adams twice to round out the contest.
