GLENDORA, Calif. – The first top 25 match-up in school history certainly showed the progress the Cougar water polo program has made.
Despite coming out of the short-end of a 10-8 overtime decision against San Diego State, there was a fury activity and excitement throughout an intense contest.
Even though the No. 25 Cougars fell behind early after giving up the game's first two goals, they responded quite nicely. Mireia Tutusaus Alcaraz scored a power-play goal off a quality pass from Sarah Adams with just over two minutes left in the first frame.
The Aztecs 2-1 lead was short lived as the second quarter started. Adams scored her 23rd goal of the season 21 ticks into the stanza. Another net-finder from Alcaraz with 4:48 left until intermission gave the Cougars a 3-2 edge. San Diego scored the quarter's final goal when Karli Canale scored the first of five power play goals for the Aztecs.
Knotted at 3-3, San Diego State took a two-goal lead as goals from Lizzy Bilz then Maddy Parenteau put the visitors ahead. Mar Pastor put the Cougars back within a goal as she found the back of the cage with 1:09 left until the buzzer. The 21st ranked Aztecs got another Canale goal as they held a 6-4 edge with eight minutes remaining.
Britt Harris made a beautiful spin move just to the right of the goal as she created space for her team leading 38th goal just over a minutes into the last quarter. Despite cutting their deficit to 6-5, the Cougars were called for an exclusion on San Diego State's ensuing offensive chance. The Aztecs took advantage with an Emily Bennett goal.
San Diego State scored their fifth power play goal with 3:38 left on a Hannah Carrillo net-finder which gave her team a seemingly comfortable 8-5 lead. Things got a bit crazy in the last 90 seconds. Pastor scored the first of three unanswered goals then, with 53 seconds left, Harris scored a power play goal. After San Diego State was called for an offensive foul, Hannah Bradley scored with 33 second remaining to knot the score at 8-8 sending the game into a pair three-minute extra sessions.
However, the final periods were the Aztecs. They took the lead for good with a Carillo goal less than a minute into the first extra period. They solidified their lead when Shelby Kraft scored on a five-meter penalty shot with 1:26 left in the first overtime to round out the scoring.
One of the keys to the Aztecs win was a 5-for-12 effort on the extra-person attack. Conversely Azusa Pacific went 3-for-7 during the same opportunities. Azusa Pacific held a 32-31 edge in total shots.
