Cougars Record School's First Top 25 Win

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – It was a history making day for the Azusa Pacific water polo program.

After posting a school first in the opener, the Cougars closed out the Tina Finali Invitational with a last second setback.

With the split on Saturday, the Cougars are now 8-4 overall. Next week, the program is set to play four games again as they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to take part in the Wolverine Invitational.

In winning their first ever game against a nationally ranked program, the Cougars used strong offensive play in the second and third quarters to aid in the win.

"It was a physical game and we need to do a few things better but it's great to break into the win column against a top 25 team," head coach Julie Snodgrass said. "We came close a handful of times in the past and feels good to break through. Hopefully this is the start of something more for this program."

Tied at 3-3 heading into the second quarter, Azusa Pacific won the period by a 5-2 count. Hannah Bradley scored twice and assisted on another to aid in the scoring outburst. Sarah Adams scored once and assisted on a Mar Pastor net-finder.

Azusa Pacific built on their 8-5 lead with a three-goal third period. Pastor scored twice and Britni Tisdale also found the back of the cage as the Cougars held an 11-7 lead with eight minutes left.

Cal State East Bay was able to score twice but a five-meter goal by Bradley held assure the victory.

A stingy defense, especially while down a player, was key. Azusa Pacific was forced to play a player down on 11 occasions but fought off the disadvantage seven times. Conversely, Azusa Pacific went 3-for-7 on the extra person attack.

The Cougars held a 21-18 edge in shots.

Looking to sweep their four games, the Cougars came-up short as the Athenas scored late to pull out the tight win.

The Cougars scored the first goal when Sarah Adams scored the first of her three just under two minutes into the contest. The next two goals came from ClaremontMuddScripps as they took a 2-1 lead midway through the second frame.  Gabrielle Martinez tied the score at 2-2 heading into intermission.

A pair of goals from Jessica Gaffney gave the Athenas a 4-2 lead with 3:23 left in the third quarter. The Cougars continued to fight and when Britt Harris scored with 39 seconds left in the period Azusa Pacific's deficit was down to a goal.

Adams tied the contest at 4-4 with 6:36 remaining but ClaremontMuddScripps re-took their lead just 17 seconds later. Adams completed her high scoring contest and retied the scored at 5-5 with 4:41 left. Neither team found the back of the net until Roxy Kiessling scored the game winning on an even strength goal with three seconds left.
