Long Ball Lifts Cougars To Season-High 13 Runs

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- In just four innings, Azusa Pacific tied its season-high of 11 runs before adding two more late while hanging on to survive a late rally from Cal State San Bernardino in a 13-8 win over the Coyotes in non-conference action Friday afternoon.

The Cougars hit four home runs, another season-high, and sent at least nine batters to the plate in two separate innings to race to an early 11-1 lead in the first four innings. Tim Lichty and Nick Estrella each hit a three-run home run, while Austin Russ and Grant Gamble hit back-to-back solo home runs in the third inning.

Seven of the Cougars' nine offensive starters collected two hits each, and all nine reached safely at least twice in the game as Azusa Pacific drew nine walks from Coyote pitchers.

With the win, Azusa Pacific runs its season-opening win streak to nine, while Cal State San Bernardino remains winless through five games as the teams head into the two-game series finale on Saturday.

What's Next: Azusa Pacific wraps up its non-conference schedule on Saturday, Feb. 17, with a 1 p.m. game against Cal State San Bernardino at Fiscalini Field in San Bernardino.

How It Happened: Azusa Pacific sent nine batters to the plate in the first inning, and Lichty's three-run home run with two outs gave Carranza a four-run lead to start with. Two innings later, Russ and Gamble hit back-to-back solo home runs to extend the lead to 6-0.

Estrella capped a five-run fourth inning with a three-run home run, making it an 11-1 lead as the Cougars sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth. Cal State San Bernardino scratched a run across in the bottom of the fourth and added three in the fifth to cut the lead to 11-5.

Justin Gomez drove in another run with a one-out infield single, extending the lead to 12-5, but the Coyotes rallied in the eighth with three runs. Konner Arnold led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run, which was followed by a two-run home run inside the left-field foul pole from Tyler Robles to slash the lead to 12-8. Joseph Kim added a two-out RBI single in the ninth to deliver another insurance run.
