How It Happened: The Cougars wasted no time erasing an early 1-0 deficit, scoring five in the second inning, all with two outs and without the benefit of a base hit in the frame. After Mychael Goudreau drew a two-out walk to load the bases, Gomez was plunked on a 1-2 pitch to bring home the first run of the inning. The next two batters reached on errors with a wild pitch in between, all resulting in four more runs that gave Azusa Pacific a 5-1 lead.
O'Connor's infield single in the fourth inning was the only hit in a two-run inning, as a wild throw and a passed ball allowed the Cougars to take a 7-1 lead in a game which it only had two hits to that point. In the sixth inning, Sean Aspinall hit a two-run home run with two outs, extending the lead to 9-1 before CSUSB cut the lead in half with a four-run sixth. Garrett Ouellette provided most of the damage with a three-run home run the pulled the Coyotes within 9-5.
Kearney and Szczesny each threw a perfect inning of relief to maintain the lead to the ninth inning, where the Cougars added three runs on consecutive run-scoring hits from Gamble, Goudreau, and Aaron Roose to extend the lead to 12-5.
