Azusa Pacific and Biola battle for 110 minutes before finishing in a 1-1 tie

LA MIRADA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific and Biola battled for 110 minutes on Saturday night, however, neither team was able to leave with a victory. The two teams ended the match in a 1-1 tie, following 90 minutes of regulation time and a pair of 10-minute overtimes.
 
In the first 29 minutes of the match, Biola was able to create significant chances, with three shots on goal that put pressure on the Cougar defense. On the other end, Azusa Pacific also threatened, with a pair of shots on goal. In the 30th minute, Biola was able to break through with a goal, as Sarah Jefferies struck from about 19 yards out to take a 1-0 lead. In the 42nd minute, the Cougars threatened to tie the game, however, a Christine Messner shot was saved by the Biola keeper.
 
Early in the second half, Azusa Pacific was able to tie the score at 1-1, thanks to a goal by sophomore Randi Macadangdang. The goal was assisted by junior Emily Koflanovich, as Macadangdang recorded her second goal of the season.
 
In the 85th and 87th minute, with time winding down, Azusa Pacific goalkeeper, sophomore Tatum French, recorded two saves that kept the score tied in order to force overtime.
 
In the first overtime, the Cougars put the pressure on the Biola defense and goalkeeper. Azusa Pacific had four shots on goal, all which were saved by the Biola keeper. Following a scoreless first overtime, the second overtime saw only one shot from each team. With time winding down in the 110th minute, Biola took one final shot to try and break the tie, however, the Cougars were able to block the shot.
 
On the match, Azusa Pacific had 13 shots, with nine on goal, while Biola had nine shots with five of them being on target. French played all 110 minutes in goal for the Cougars, and finished with four saves.
 
Following the draw, Azusa Pacific is now 5-8-2 overall, with a 5-2-2 PacWest record. The Cougars close out the regular season with two PacWest home games, as they welcome Notre Dame de Namur on Monday, Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m., followed by Point Loma on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7:00 p.m.

Saturday night's game represented the third sport to wrap up head-to-head competition between Azusa Pacific and Biola in the Cornerstone Cup rivalry series presented by West Coast Sand & Gravel. Earlier this week, Azusa Pacific's four-set win in volleyball secured a season split, while the men's soccer team claimed a 1-0 victory in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.  With Saturday night's draw, Azusa Pacific now leads the Cornerstone Cup standings by a 20-10 score with men's and women's cross country competing for more Cornerstone Cup points at next week's PacWest Cross Country Championships.
