AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific continued its late-season run of success with a 2-1 win over Notre Dame de Namur Monday night.
Cara Scammon answered a first-half goal from the Argonauts less than six minutes later to tie the game at 1-1, and Randi Macadangdang scored the game-winner in the 58th minute to lift the Cougars to the victory.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 6-2-2 in PacWest play and 6-8-2 overall heading into Saturday night's season finale against Point Loma, which has already clinched the PacWest title with a 9-0-1 record through 10 of its 11 conference games. The teams met in non-conference action in San Diego earlier this month, with Point Loma claiming a 2-1 win over the Cougars.
Although Notre Dame de Namur struck first in the 21st minute with an Allyssa Valente header from six yards out off a takeaway and cross from Susan Whitney deep in Cougar territory, Azusa Pacific quickly answered. Less than six minutes later, the Cougars created an opportunity up the right side to Macadangdang, who played the ball in from the sideline to Kaylee Nicoll. Nicoll played a through ball to Sydney Gilkerson in the right side of the box, and with a defender closing in, she played it to Scammon for a one-touch shot to the upper right corner just past the NDNU goalkeeper for her first goal of the season.
Macadangdang gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead in the 58th minute after Tanna Brinkman found her with a long pass from the midfield to beat the offside trap. Macadangdang slipped behind the defense for a one-on-one opportunity against the goalkeeper, and she converted with a shot to the far post for her third goal of the season.
Notre Dame de Namur registered a 13-8 edge in total shots, but goalkeeper Tatum French made four of her five saves after halftime to help lead Azusa Pacific to the victory.
