AZUSA, Calif. -- The 2018 season for Azusa Pacific came to an end on Saturday night, as the Cougars were defeated by PacWest regular season champion Point Loma, 1-0. However, the night was a special occasion, as it was the final game for eight Cougar seniors who all entered the program as freshmen and started their final game together.
Â
Point Loma scored the lone goal of the game in the 37
th minute, as Ashlee Watkins put away a Bella Diaz cross from the right side into the net from six yards out. The Cougars forced Point Loma goalkeeper to make a tough save in the closing seconds of the first half when
Kennedy Christie headed a corner kick towards the upper right corner, but Hinson tipped it away with 15 seconds left in the half to preserve the 1-0 halftime lead.
The Cougars' best scoring opportunity of the second half was created by
Kaylee Nicoll, who led Brittany Maze into the box for a good look at the goal from less than 15 yards out. With Point Loma defenders closing in, Maze shot low to the right side, where Hinson was able to stop and control it for another save.
Point Loma entered the game with the PacWest championship already secured, and the Sea Lions closed it out with their 14th shutout of the season, finishing the regular season 15-1-1 overall and 10-0-1 in PacWest play. Point Loma surrendered only four goals all season (one in PacWest play), with Azusa Pacific scoring one of those four in a 2-1 defeat when the teams met in a non-conference matchup on Oct. 6.
