SURPRISE, Ariz. – In the first round of the PacWest tournament, the second-seeded Azusa Pacific Cougars overpowered the Sea Lions of Point Loma 5-0. With their tournament-opening win the Cougars advance to the championship bracket where they are scheduled to face the third-seeded Seasiders of BYU-Hawaii Friday, April 21 at 9:00 a.m.

The Cougars prepare to face nationally ranked No. 27 BYU-Hawaii for the second time this season. In the first encounter, the Cougars prevailed 5-1 over the Seasiders.
 
Azusa Pacific set the winning tone early in the match when they dominated doubles play winning all three matches. Oliver Frank and Pascal Engel paired at the No. 1 position won 8-5 to record the Cougars first win of the day. Followed by an 8-4 win courtesy of Christian Schmid and Shepherd Newcomb at the No. 2 spot. Roberto Luconi and teammate Cameron Backman concluded doubles play with an 8-3 win in the No. 3 slot.
 
Both of the Cougars singles wins were won in two sets, first to beat the Seasiders was Newcomb who defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 4 position. Schimd clinched the match winning 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.
 
Following Schmid's win, Azusa Pacifics four remaining matches went unfinished. Franks match was stopped with him taking the lead in the first set 7-5, 0-3 in the No. 1 position. In the No. 3 slot Engel was down one set, taking control in second set 3-6, 4-1 when his match was called. Luconi was up 6-3, 2-1 at the No. 5 spot when the match was clinched. Backman one his first set 7-5 and was down 0-1 when his match went unfinished.
