SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific opened its San Diego road trip with a 6-3 victory over Point Loma for the Cougars' eighth consecutive victory on Thursday afternoon.

The Cougars are now 16-3 this season, including a 3-2 record against the other four teams in the top five of the West Region. On Friday, the Cougars will play the No. 2 team in the region, UC San Diego, which defeated the Cougars 5-4 in Azusa earlier in the season.
At No. 1 doubles Jan Meyer and Olger van Gent defeated the No. 2 doubles team in the West Region, Daniel Milliken and Andre Staab, 8-6 to give the Cougars a 2-1 advantage heading into singles.
Meyer then defeated Staab again in singles 6-2, 6-2 to secure the team victory for Azusa Pacific. It was the senior's eighth consecutive win this season, while making his last trip to Point Loma. Meyer has a career singles record of 7-0 against Point Loma with just one set dropped his freshman year and four of those wins coming against Andre Staab.
Alan Leahy got the Cougars' first singles victory, winning 6-2, 6-4 against Milliken at No. 3 singles. Leahy has now won nine consecutive matches and has a team-best 16 singles victories this season.
At No. 6 singles Shepherd Newcomb won his match 7-5, 6-3 after also winning 8-2 at No. 3 doubles alongside Christian Scmid, who retired from his match at No. 2 singles in the third set.
Pascal Engel wrapped up the day with a come-from-behind victory at No. 4 singles, winning 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 to make the final score of the team match 6-3.
Azusa Pacific remains perfect against the teams ranked from No. 4 to No. 8 in the West Region with a 6-0 record a day before playing No. 2 UC San Diego. In the playoffs the No. 2 team in the region will host the No. 3 team for a regional playoff to earn a spot in the national tournament.
