ORANGE, Calif. – Taking an hour drive down the highway 57 to play a neutral site game was a recipe for success.
Azusa Pacific made the necessary halftime adjustments to post a 9-8 win against Brown on Wednesday afternoon at Chapman University.
Both Britt Harris and Alba Espinar posted hat tricks in the win. Megan Myers added two goals while a fourth quarter goal from Maryann Slama proved to be the game winner.
After the Cougars scored on their first two possessions, Brown got on the scoreboard at the quarter's midway point. The teams traded goals in the period's remaining minutes as Azusa Pacific took a 3-2 edge heading into the second eight minutes of action.
The Bears won the period by a two-goal margin as took a 5-4 lead into the contest's intermission. During that opening half the Bears took advantage of their extra-person attack chances as they went 3-for-5 in those opportunities. Conversely, Azusa Pacific struggled (0-for-5) in the same chances.
As the game progressed the Cougars took advantage of those same opportunities. In the third quarter, Myers and Espinar each scored on five-meter penalty shots as Azusa Pacific took a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The momentum helped Azusa Pacific to a 4-1 period win as they took a two-goal lead (8-6) in the last period. Three of the Cougars four goals in the quarter came via a penalty shot or with a 6-on-5 opportunity.
Slama made the score 9-6 Azusa Pacific with 6:18 left in the contest to put her team in seemingly comfortable position. Brown clawed back and got within one-goal after an extra-person attack goal with 3:25 left.
The final moment saw each team with scoring chances but neither squad could convert. Brown's final chance with less than 30 seconds went wide right and the Cougars were able to run the clock.
Katie Margot made six saves in front of the cage. Ashley Taylor contributed a big game offensively as she handed out four assists.
