"Any win we can get over a Division I opponent of the caliber of Cal State Fullerton is a plus for us," head coach David Goodman said. "It's not easy to open the season with an opponent like that, so to get two wins today gives us something positive to build off of for the rest of the season."
It was a rematch of the Cougars' season opener last year, where the Titans edged the Cougars 4-3.
"I think we have improved a lot from last year, but so have they," Goodman said. "Their program has been improving over the years and I think they are a lot stronger this year than when we played them last year."
Sophomore Jackie Resler earned the Cougars' point with a three-set victory at No. 6 singles, taking the 10-point tiebreaker 10-8 to put the Cougars on the board. Resler is now a perfect 4-0 at No. 6 singles in her career.
The Cougars' win in doubles came from a pair of freshmen making their debuts for Azusa Pacific as Kara Hinton and Lilit Vardanyan won 6-4. The pair held onto an early break lead before Hinton served out the victory.
Azusa Pacific gets right back onto the courts on Thursday with a match against Concordia, which will be played in Costa Mesa. The home opener will be on Saturday against UC San Diego.
