AZUSA, Calif. – For not playing a match in 13 days the Azusa Pacific did show a little rust but still had plenty of energy to post a convincing victory.

The Cougars strong doubles played continued on Friday afternoon. Azusa Pacific had lost just three total doubles matches heading into Saturday. That number remained the same as they swept the doubles matches.
At the No. 1 spot Jan Meyer and Christian Schmid were tested but came through with an 8-6 victory. The second match off the court came when Olger Van Gent and Shepherd Newcomb posted a strong a 8-5 win at the third spot.
The tandem of Pascal Engel and Marnix Pluim found themselves in a 6-2 hole before battling back. Despite trailing 8-7 the duo forced a tiebreaker. During that tiebreaker the Cougars broke a 5-5 tie by winning the final two points and putting Azusa Pacific in firm control of the team match.
Jan showed why he is the top ranked player in NCAA Division as he didn't drop a game in a match that took less than an hour to complete.
Azusa Pacific was challenged but came out victorious as the remaining matches came off the court. After rallying in the first set, Christian Schmid cruised from there as he won 7-6 (4), 6-1 at the No. 2 singles match. Similarly Alan Leahy dropped the opening frame but came back to post a 3-6, 6-2, 10-5 victory at the third slot.
The next two matches off the courts saw Shepherd Newcomb notch a 6-4, 6-4 triumph at the No. 6 spot while Olger Van Gent won 6-4, 6-3 at the fifth slot.
Pascal Engel completed the team sweep as the senior was tested but won a three-setter at the No. 4 position.
