AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific women's tennis improved to 5-0 this season against NCAA Division II West Region opponents with a 9-0 sweep of Cal State Stanislaus, which is ranked No. 9 in the region, Friday afternoon at the Cougar Tennis Complex.

In her first match this season, senior Lindsey Yeom won her singles match 6-2, 6-1 after pairing with Valeriia Kashina for an 8-2 victory at No. 3 singles, helping the Cougars win all 27 sets in the triumph. The win for Azusa Pacific snapped the perfect record this season of the Warriors, dropping them to 3-1, while the Cougars improved to 5-1.
After the Cougars swept doubles play, freshman Lilit Vardanyan claimed her first win of the year, 6-1, 6-1, to give Azusa Pacific a 4-0 lead overall. Fellow freshman Kara Hinton claimed the fifth point shortly after with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles. Hinton has now won four of her last five singles matches.
Lisa Schneider improved her singles winning streak to five matches, which ties the team-high, taking a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. Kashina, who is ranked No. 20 in the region, upset No. 15 Cassidy Ferrell 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
Natalie Johnson bounced back in style after her first loss this season to a regional opponent with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over J'ana Diamond. The junior is now 4-2 on the season in singles play.
After getting the first point in doubles at No. 3, Hinton and Vardanyan won 8-3 at No. 2 followed shortly by an 8-6 win from Johnson and Schneider at No. 1 doubles to complete the sweep. Azusa Pacific has now won eight of its last nine doubles matches.
The Cougars have a week off before playing Western New Mexico next Saturday morning at 10 p.m. at the Cougar Tennis Complex.
