Falling Short

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Almost but not quite enough.

Despite playing a majority of the game within striking distance of Pomona-Pitzer, the Cougars couldn't come out on top as they fell 14-10.

Entering the game as the nation's top ranked NCAA Division III team, the Sagehens led for 90 percent of the game. Even though they trailed a majority of the game, Azusa Pacific kept their deficit at one or two goals a majority of the game.

Scoresheet

Pomona-Pitzer started the game strong as they went in front 4-1 with just over three minutes left in the quarter. However, the Cougars responded with two unanswered goals by Maryann Slama and Courtney Folsom as Azusa Pacific trimmed their deficit to 4-3 heading into the second frame.

During that second quarter the teams went tit-for-tat. Each time the Sagehens took a two-goal lead, Azusa Pacific scored the next goal but never took the lead. Pomona-Pitzer scored three times in the frame as did the Cougars.

Trailing 7-6 heading into the third quarter Taylor Whitney scored an even strength goal then another on a five-meter penalty shot to put the Cougars in front 8-7 with 5:51 left in the period. It was the last time the Cougars led. Pomona-Pitzer responded by scoring the final three goals of the stanza, including a momentum building net finder with eight seconds left, as they took a 10-8 edge.

The final eight minutes belong to Pomona-Pitzer. The Sagehens increased their lead as they held off Azusa Pacific by outscoring the Cougars 4-2 in the quarter.

Alyssa Woodward and Morgan McCracken were a two-person wrecking crew as they scored five goals each for the Sagehens.

Slama put together a hat trick in the first half while Whitney scored twice each in the third and fourth quarter to pace the Cougars offense.

Azusa Pacific returns to Golden Coast Conference play on Friday as they travel to 18th ranked San Diego State for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
