Rivalry Setback

STOCKTON, Calif. – Sweeping your rival is rarely a simple task.

Looking to ride the momentum of a program changing victory against California Baptist earlier this season, Azusa Pacific was poised to advance in the winners bracket of the Golden Coast Conference tournament.

However, California Baptist jumped out early as they posted a 17-8 win on Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the Golden Coast Conference tournament. 

The fourth-seeded Cougars will play in the fifth-place game of the tournament on Saturday against the winner of Santa Clara and Fresno Pacific.

Of significant for the records books, Taylor Whitney surpassed the 200-career goal mark in the contest. The senior is the first to do so at Azusa Pacific after a four-goal game. Whitney has found the back of the cage 202 times in her Cougar career. 

Looking to sweep the season series for the Lancers the Cougars fell behind early and couldn't recover. California Baptist, the tournament's fifth-seed, held a lead of 11-2 after the first two periods as they held respective scoring edges of 7-1 and 4-1 in the first and second periods.

Azusa Pacific continued to battle. Each team scored three goals during the third and fourth periods. Britt Harris found the back of the cage twice in the third quarter while Ashley Taylor added a goal. Whitney tallied a four period hat trick. 

Katie Margot played the first two periods in goal where she made two saves. Erica Marquez completed the game with four total saves in the final two periods.
