Cougars Continue Challenging Slate

DAVIS, Calif. – The early portion of the 2015 schedule for the Cougars water polo program has offered them little room for error.

On Saturday Azusa Pacific squared off against two nationally ranked foes. During the morning they faced No. 4 California for the second time this season before dueling with No. 16 UC Davis in the afternoon.

Game One - #4 California 24, Azusa Pacific 4 Scoresheet

The Golden Bears jumped out to a 5-0 lead less than four minutes into the contest and never looked back. California went onto to score eight of the period's 10 goals. Megan Myers and Maryann Slama scored the two goals for the Cougars.

Unfortunately for Azusa Pacific any hopes of a comeback were brushed aside by a Golden Bears offense that won the second period by a 4-0 count.

During the final 16 minutes the California offense continued to flow while their defense kept things difficult for the Azusa Pacific offense. The Golden Bears won the final two quarters by identical 6-1 scores.

Ashley Taylor and Taylor Whitney were the second half goal scorers for the Cougars.

Game Two - #16 UC Davis 14, Azusa Pacific 7 Scoresheet

The Cougars couldn't dig themselves out of an early hole as they fells to the Aggies.

UC Davis raced out to a 4-0 lead before the Cougars got on the scoreboard with an Ashley Taylor goal. The Azusa Pacific goal stemmed the tide only momentarily as the home squad finished the quarter with three unanswered goals.

That momentum was carried over into the second quarter as the Aggies scored three of the four goals in the frame. Maryann Slama put the Cougars lone tally on the scoreboard. UC Davis held a 10-2 lead after 16 minutes of action.

Azusa Pacific played better all-around in the final half. The Cougars limited UC Davis to just one third period goal while Alba Espinar found the back of the cage for the Azusa Pacific goal. The Cougars won the fourth quarter 4-3 as Espinar, Taylor Whitney, Ashley Taylor and Morgan Hage scored.
